Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer is reported to be in a stable condition after experiencing a cardiac arrest.

As both teams witnessed their players being substituted midway through the second half due to Tom Lockyer requiring medical treatment, the 29-year-old was warmly applauded by all sides of the ground as he was carried off on a stretcher, leading to the abandonment of the match.

“We all hope and pray for our leader and captain Tom Lockyer,” expressed Luton. “We don’t know the full extent of what happened and what the next steps are at this stage, but we thank Bournemouth and the medical staff on both sides for their immediate response, which was absolutely amazing.”

Following the confirmation of the game abandonment, players from both Luton and Bournemouth returned to the pitch to applaud the supporters, with Hatters manager Rob Edwards visibly emotional. Lockyer, who had previously collapsed during the play-off final in May, had undergone heart surgery and was cleared to return to playing in June.

“The match between AFC Bournemouth and Luton Town FC has been abandoned due to a player medical incident,” stated the Premier League. “Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today’s match.”

Luton called for players, staff, and supporters “to come together” in support of Lockyer and his family, expressing regret to the fans present and thanking everyone for the heartfelt applause and singing during such a challenging time.
