Jason Momoa, the charismatic actor who first took on the iconic role of Aquaman in 2017’s Justice League, is gearing up for the release of the much-anticipated “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” However, amidst the excitement, Momoa recently opened up in an interview with Entertainment Tonight about his reservations concerning the future trajectory of the Aquaman franchise.
Expressing his sentiments about the potential continuation of his portrayal as the King of Atlantis, Momoa remarked, “I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice.” He delved into the evolving dynamics at DC Studios, highlighting the visions of the studio heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran, who seem inclined towards exploring fresh creative avenues. Momoa candidly added, “The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves [Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], then there’s a possibility. But right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.'”
While Momoa envisions a prolonged journey with the Aquaman character, he acknowledges the shifting sands within DC Studios. Reflecting on his affection for the role and the expansive world it encompasses, he shared, “I love this character and I would want to play it for a long time. I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there’s a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it.”
Having embarked on a standalone franchise for Aquaman after his Justice League debut, Momoa has played a pivotal role in shaping the character’s cinematic narrative. Intriguingly, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is slated to mark the culmination of the DC Extended Universe that commenced in 2013.
